Retail and wholesale

Margin, inventory and liquidity determine economic performance in retail and wholesale. We prepare your figures so that you can plan purchasing, financing and product range on a sound basis.

Industry

What matters to you

Whether a specialist shop in Merano’s town centre, a sporting goods retailer in the Vinschgau valley or a wholesaler with customers across Europe: trading businesses deal with large volumes of documents, changing inventory levels and often tight margins. At the same time, they must meet numerous reporting and record-keeping obligations, from daily takings to Intrastat returns.

We handle bookkeeping and filings, value your inventory and support you with buying and selling goods abroad. We also help with cash-flow planning, meetings with banks and decisions concerning your business premises.

Daily takings, tills and payments

Retailers must transmit their daily takings (corrispettivi) electronically to the Revenue Agency, usually via an approved electronic cash register (registratore telematico). The till data, card terminal payments and bookkeeping must match. Recent rules strengthen the cross-checking of electronic payments against transmitted takings.

We check the tax treatment of daily takings, vouchers, deposits and returns and reconcile the data with your accounts. Where necessary, we clarify technical till settings together with your till provider.

Inventory and margin

At year end, inventory (rimanenze) must be counted and valued. The valuation method chosen, the treatment of seasonal and slow-moving stock and the consistency of the method all directly affect the result. A flawed stocktake is also a frequent starting point for tax audits.

Running your business takes more than the annual accounts. We analyse gross profit and margin by product group or branch, show trends in stock turnover and staff costs, and help you base prices and product range on solid figures.

  • Support with stocktaking and its documentation
  • Valuation and write-down of inventories
  • Analyses by product group, branch or sales channel

Purchases and sales in the EU and beyond

Many South Tyrolean retailers source goods from Germany or Austria or sell to customers abroad. Intra-Community acquisitions and supplies are subject to their own VAT rules and, depending on volume, must be reported in Intrastat returns. When selling to private individuals in other EU countries, for example through an online shop, the VAT of the country of destination may apply above a certain threshold.

For exports to non-EU countries, customs clearance and proof of export are particularly important. We also check whether your company qualifies as a regular exporter (esportatore abituale) and can purchase without VAT within an available ceiling (plafond).

Liquidity and business premises

In retail, inventory, pre-financing of seasonal goods and payment terms tie up a lot of capital. Cash flow and financial planning shows early on when bottlenecks are looming and whether overdraft facilities, loans or subsidised financing make sense. We prepare such plans and, on request, accompany you to meetings with the bank.

For many retailers, the business premises are one of the most important decisions. Commercial leases in Italy have statutory minimum terms and special features, such as compensation for loss of goodwill (indennità di avviamento) when the landlord terminates. When buying or selling a business (cessione d’azienda), we advise on the purchase price, taxes and liability for existing debts.

Answers on tills, inventory valuation and business premises.

Can’t find your question?+39 0473 200 852
What should I do if my cash register breaks down?

Contact your cash register technician as soon as possible and let us know. Together we will clarify how to report the outage and how to record takings properly until the device is restored.

Do I have to file Intrastat reports if I only occasionally buy in Germany?

That depends on the volume of your intra-Community acquisitions and supplies. Below certain thresholds, some filings are not required at all. We keep an eye on your figures and tell you which obligations you have.

How do I value seasonal stock I couldn’t sell?

An impairment must be assessed under the applicable valuation rules and documented in a traceable way. The valuation under commercial law and its recognition for tax purposes may differ. We review your inventories and the available evidence before the year-end close.

What should I look out for in the lease for new business premises?

Key points are the term, termination options, rent indexation, subletting, alterations and what happens when the business is transferred. We review the economic and tax aspects and work with your lawyer where needed.

Let’s talk about your plans.
