Bookkeeping under Italian law

Depending on legal form and turnover, ordinary accounting (contabilità ordinaria) or simplified accounting (contabilità semplificata) applies. Corporations are always required to keep ordinary accounts, while sole proprietorships and partnerships may use simplified accounting below certain turnover thresholds. Even simpler rules apply to taxpayers under the flat-rate regime (regime forfettario).

The choice of system affects how profit is determined, your obligations and the workload. We check with you which accounting method applies to you or makes sense, and support a change if your situation changes.

VAT: registers and returns

Incoming and outgoing invoices are recorded in the VAT registers. This produces the periodic VAT settlement (liquidazione IVA), which is monthly or quarterly depending on turnover. The amount payable is paid using the F24 payment form, and the settlement data are also reported electronically to the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate).

Errors often occur in special cases: the reverse charge mechanism, transactions with other countries, partially non-deductible input VAT or split payment for public sector clients. We make sure these cases are handled correctly.

E-invoicing and digital archiving

E-invoices and their legally compliant digital storage are part of everyday life for many businesses in Italy. We check which obligations apply to your activity and take account of special rules, for example for healthcare services or cross-border transactions.

We help you set up a practical workflow: from the right software and recipient code through to forwarding documents to us. On request, we can also issue and check your invoices.

  • Setting up the e-invoicing workflow
  • Checking tax rates, exemptions and mandatory information
  • Reconciliation with the Revenue Agency’s online tax portal
  • Legally compliant digital archiving

Periodic returns and payments

In addition to VAT, further filings and payments arise during the year, such as tax prepayments, withholding on fees and, depending on the activity, reports on intra-Community trade in goods (Intrastat). We keep a deadline calendar for you and prepare payments in good time.

Should an omission nevertheless occur, it can often be remedied through voluntary correction (ravvedimento operoso) with reduced penalties. We tell you what to do in that case.

Can’t find your question?+39 0473 200 852
Do I have to file VAT monthly or quarterly?

That depends on your activity and turnover. Below a statutory turnover threshold, quarterly VAT settlement is possible; a small interest surcharge is then added to the tax payable. We check which option applies to you and makes sense.

What documents do you need from me?

We usually receive e-invoices directly via the tax portal or your software. From you we mainly need bank statements, receipts not covered by e-invoices, contracts and information on unusual transactions. We agree a fixed schedule for sending them.

What happens if an invoice is rejected by the SdI?

A rejected invoice is deemed not to have been issued. It must be corrected and resubmitted within the prescribed time limit. We check the reason for rejection and help you correct it.

Can you work with my existing accounting software?

In many cases, yes. We check whether data exchange is possible or suggest a solution that fits well with our processes. The aim is to avoid entering data twice.

How can we help you?

In the initial meeting, we clarify your request and discuss what support you need.
